🎻 Ethnic and folk music — Armenian

Armenian music is notably associated with the duduk, a double-reed instrument traditionally made of apricot wood, rather than a simple flute. Its soft timbre accompanies songs, dances, ceremonies and lament repertoires, often with a second duduk sustaining a drone. Armenian liturgical tradition, notably notated using ancient neumes called khaz, has a history going back to the early centuries of Christianity, though its present-day forms have evolved over time. Composer and ethnomusicologist Komitas played a major role in collecting and transforming Armenian folk song. Dance music, chanson, pop and diaspora creations today maintain a strong international circulation of these traditions.
