🎻 Ethnic and folk music — Azerbaijani

Azerbaijani music is notably marked by mugham, an art music combining modal structures, vocal and instrumental improvisation and classical poetry. It has historical links with Persian, Caucasian and Turkic traditions, without being simply a variant of Persian or Turkish music. The classic mugham trio often features a singer playing the gaval, an Azerbaijani tar and a kamancha. Ashiq traditions — poet-singers accompanied by the saz — and folk dances are other major components. Jazz mugham, developed notably in Baku in the 20th century, along with pop and new creations, ensure the ongoing renewal of this heritage today.
