🌍 World Music — Balkan
Balkan music brings together the traditions of a region at the crossroads of the Slavic, Greek, Albanian, Roma, Ottoman, Mediterranean and Central European worlds. Asymmetric rhythms, for example in 7, 9 or 11 beats, are especially present in Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Greece and some neighbouring regions, but do not characterise all Balkan music. Brass bands are important in Serbia, North Macedonia and Roma communities, while the violin, accordion, gaida, kaval, tambura and polyphonic singing dominate elsewhere. Roma musicians have played a decisive role in many professional repertoires, though not all Balkan music can be described as Roma. Festivals, weddings and the Balkan brass or fusion scenes today sustain strong international vitality.
