The music of Bosnia and Herzegovina is notably marked by sevdalinka, an urban song developed under the Ottoman Empire and passed down in Bosnian cities. The term sevdah evokes love, desire or deep melancholy, but sevdalinka has its own poetic and melodic forms and should not simply be equated with fado or blues. It has been accompanied, depending on the period, by the saz, accordion, violin and orchestral ensembles. Rural songs, the ganga of Herzegovina, and Serbian, Croatian, Bosniak and Roma traditions contribute to the country's diversity. Rock, pop, modern folk and new interpretations of sevdah today keep an active scene alive.
