Chilean music is notably marked by the cueca, the national dance with several regional variants, as well as by the rural tonada. The Nueva Canción Chilena of the 1960s and 1970s, carried by Violeta Parra, Víctor Jara, Quilapayún and Inti-Illimani, combined folkloric research, Andean instruments and social or political commitment. The charango and the quena are mainly characteristic of the Andean north and of this musical movement, not of the country as a whole. Chile also has the Mapuche traditions of the kultrún and the trutruka, the island repertoires of Chiloé, and a current scene where chanson, rock and urban music continue to revisit these legacies.
