🎻 Ethnic and folk music — Kabyle

Kabyle music, native to the Berber-speaking region of northern Algeria, relies largely on sung poetry and the Kabyle language. The Algerian mandole, guitar, flutes and percussion accompany repertoires ranging from village song to the modern compositions of Idir, Lounis Aït Menguellet, Matoub Lounès or the group Djurdjura. Achewiq, a traditional song often performed unaccompanied by women, is one of its notable vocal forms. Kabyle song frequently addresses exile, memory, love, social condition and the defence of the Amazigh language. The diaspora in France and elsewhere in Europe has greatly contributed to its spread and to its current crossovers with folk, rock and rap.
