🌍 World Music — Maghrebi

Maghrebi music encompasses the traditions of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, as well as those of Mauritania under the broad geographical and institutional definition of the Maghreb. The Arab-Andalusian heritage gave rise there to distinct schools — āla, san'a, gharnati or malouf — alongside popular genres such as raï, chaâbi and mezoued. Amazigh and Saharan cultures hold an essential place, as do African legacies represented notably by the gnawa, diwan and stambeli traditions. Arab, Ottoman, Jewish, Mediterranean and sub-Saharan influences complete this landscape. Festivals, diasporas and urban scenes today maintain strong circulation between these repertoires and rock, rap, jazz or electronic music.
