Mexican music includes many regional traditions, among them mariachi, which originated in western Mexico, particularly in the state of Jalisco. Early ensembles were mainly composed of strings; trumpets became characteristic of modern mariachi in the 20th century, alongside violins, the vihuela and the guitarrón. Ranchera is a sung repertoire that can be accompanied by mariachi bands, but it does not refer to the ensemble itself. Banda sinaloense, norteño, son jarocho, huapango, corrido and indigenous musics complete this landscape. Mexican regional music today enjoys a strong following both in Mexico and among Mexican communities in the United States.
