Neapolitan music notably refers to the canzone napoletana, a repertoire sung in the Neapolitan language whose modern form took shape in the 19th century and enjoyed a golden age between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Songs such as "Funiculì Funiculà" or "'O sole mio", composed in 1898, spread through theatre, publishers, the Piedigrotta festival, tenors and Italian emigration. This repertoire combines urban song, dialect poetry, theatrical traditions and classically trained vocal influences. Naples' music is not limited to this, however: singer-songwriter chanson, jazz, rock, neo-melodic music, rap and electronic creations today extend a particularly vibrant musical identity.
