Portuguese music is often associated with Lisbon fado, which developed in the 19th century and is generally accompanied by the Portuguese guitar and the viola. Fado frequently sings of absence, love, fate or saudade, but it is not necessarily always melancholic. Coimbra has a distinct fado tradition, historically linked to students and to particular performance codes. Portugal also includes the polyphonic songs of cante alentejano, the ranchos folclóricos of Minho, the traditions of Madeira and the Azores, as well as numerous dance musics. Pop, rock, hip-hop and music from Lusophone African diasporas today enrich this scene.
