🌍 World Music — Tatar

Tatar music does not correspond to a single tradition: it notably includes the repertoires of the Volga-Ural Tatars, the Crimean Tatars and the Siberian Tatars. Among the Volga Tatars, many songs stand out for their ornamentation and often pentatonic melodic organisation, also found among other peoples of the Volga-Kama region. The quray, the surnay, the violin and various forms of accordion or garmon are among the instruments used; the word kubyz can refer to different instruments depending on the region and should not systematically be translated as "jaw harp". Kazan became a major centre for Tatar composition, opera and music education. A current scene in the Tatar language also develops song, pop, rock, rap and electronic creations.
