🎻 Ethnic and folk music — Czech

Czech music includes the distinct traditions of Bohemia, Moravia and Czech Silesia. Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček drew inspiration from regional songs, dances, rhythms and languages, but their works are not mere folkloric adaptations. The polka was born in Bohemia in the 19th century before spreading internationally, while brass bands are particularly linked to certain Moravian and village traditions. Moravian folklore is notably distinguished by its lyrical songs, violin ensembles and use of the cymbalum. Rock, folk, singer-songwriter chanson, jazz and alternative music developed strongly from the socialist era onward and remain very active today.
