Tunisian music notably relies on malouf, a scholarly urban tradition marked by Arab-Andalusian heritage, but also by local developments and Ottoman influences. Mezoued is not electronic music: the term refers both to a popular bagpipe and to a festive urban genre associated with weddings, celebrations and working-class settings. Stambeli is another important tradition, originating from communities of sub-Saharan descent and combining music, dance, trance and ritual practices. Bedouin songs, gasba repertoires, and the music of the Sahel, the south and the Kerkennah Islands round out this landscape. Tunisian rap, jazz and electronic music today readily draw on local rhythms, modes and instruments.
