🌍 World Music — Turkish

The music of Turkey brings together Ottoman classical music, Anatolian folk traditions, minority musics and a significant urban production. The bağlama, often called saz in a more general sense, is a long-necked lute central to halk music and to the traditions of the aşık, poet-singers. Ottoman music uses the makamlar modal system, related to but not identical with Arab maqâmât, as well as rhythmic cycles called usul. Kurdish, Alevi, Armenian, Greek, Roma and Black Sea traditions also contribute to the country's diversity. Arabesk, Anatolian rock, Turkish pop, rap and electronic music today extend these multiple legacies.
