🌍 World Music — Gypsy

Roma or Romani music is carried by communities established in many regions of Europe and does not constitute a single musical style. It notably includes the traditions of Romanian lăutari, Balkan brass bands, Central European violin and cimbalom ensembles, Andalusian Gitano flamenco and Manouche jazz developed in Western Europe. Virtuosity and improvisation are important in several of these traditions, but should not be presented as natural or universal characteristics of Roma populations. Roma musicians have often adapted their repertoire to the societies in which they lived while preserving family transmission networks. This music remains very present at weddings, celebrations, in jazz, festivals and contemporary popular or urban scenes.
