De la chanson grecque depuis une radio de l'île de Santorin
African music encompasses an immense diversity of traditions and cannot be reduced to percussion alone. The continent includes notably the vocal polyphonies of Central Africa, the harp-lute and griot traditions of West Africa, modal Ethiopian music, lamellophone ensembles, pastoral songs and choral traditions of Southern Africa. Drums play an important role in many regions, but strings, winds, voices, bells and xylophones are equally essential. Afrobeat, highlife, Congolese rumba, mbalax, amapiano and Mandinka music also show the vitality of contemporary urban scenes. These genres now circulate widely both within the continent and across the diasporas.
